Overnight oats, and the arithmetic nobody shows you

Βρώμη ολονύκτια, και τα νούμερα που δεν σου δείχνουν

Overnight oats is the most reliable breakfast there is, and also the easiest one to accidentally double. The recipe is not the problem. The pour is.

Why it works

It is made at night, when you are neither hungry nor in a hurry — which is the only time most people make good food decisions. In the morning it requires a spoon. Nothing else about it is clever.

The three places it goes wrong

1. The oats are poured, not weighed

Sixty grams of dry oats is a normal portion and it looks like almost nothing in the bag. Poured by eye, most people land nearer a hundred. Oats are 379 calories per 100 g dry, so that habit alone is about 150 calories a day before anything goes on top.

2. The peanut butter

It is 588 calories per 100 g. A measured 15 g tablespoon is about 88; a generous spoon straight from the jar is routinely 30 to 40 g, which is 175 to 235. Nothing is wrong with peanut butter — it is just worth knowing which of those two you are eating.

3. There is no protein in it

Oats alone carry under 8 g of protein in a 60 g portion. A jar of oats, milk, banana and honey is a carbohydrate breakfast wearing a health-food label, and it is why people are hungry again by eleven. The yoghurt or the powder is not optional — it is the part that makes it a meal.

What goes in
  • Oats, dry60 g
  • Greek yoghurt, 0%150 g
  • Milk, semi-skimmed100 g
  • Berries80 g
  • Honey10 g

Herbs, spices, salt and pepper as you like — too small to count.

How
  1. Oats, yoghurt and milk into a jar. Stir properly — the dry pocket at the bottom is the reason people give up on this.
  2. Lid on, fridge, overnight. It will look too wet. It is not.
  3. Berries and honey in the morning, not the night before, or the fruit bleeds into everything.

Why it is built this way. Breakfast is the meal most often skipped and then paid for at eleven o'clock. This one is made when you are not hungry and not in a hurry, which is the only reliable way to eat it.

Add 30 g of protein powder and 200 ml of milk instead of the yoghurt and you get a different jar with a very different protein figure — that version is in the oats book, along with twelve more.

Frozen berries work and cost about a third as much. Put them in at night; they thaw perfectly by morning and they colour the whole jar, which is half of why anyone eats it.
